ABOUT ME
I Tell The Stories We Carry
I’m Jazmine Jamai - a performance poet and cultural storyteller using rhythm, memory, and lived experience to create powerful, resonant spoken word for audiences across the country.
Get to know Jazmine JamaiWhere My Voice Comes From
I grew up surrounded by language that moved people - sermons, testimonies, family stories, and moments that stuck with me long before I understood why. Before poetry, I was a preacher. I learned early that words can lift, challenge, comfort, or confront. But preaching came with expectations. Poetry gave me something new: freedom. It allowed me to speak from my whole self, without limitation, and honor the culture, memory, and people who shaped me.
what i believe
I write poetry to honor Black culture in all its depth, truth, joy, and complexity.
My work centers the stories we don’t always tell out loud—the quiet strength of Black women, the tenderness of Black men, the weight of history, and the beauty embedded in everyday life.
I challenge narratives that divide us. I celebrate the parts of our culture that the world doesn’t always understand. My poetry is meant to make people feel seen, entertained, and enlightened.
The Moments That Shape My Work
My poetic voice is direct, rhythmic, and emotionally honest.
Sometimes carrying the cadence of the church, other times feeling like a conversation across a kitchen table. I’m inspired by the women in my family, the poets I grew up admiring, and the lived experiences that taught me resilience.
I’m proud to be a national slam poet, an Urban Echo Slam Champion, a Motown Mic winner, and a performer on stages across the country. But one of my most important roles is being a Black momma - an identity that deepens the heart of everything I write.
Why I Should Be At Your Next Event
Event organizers choose to work with me because I bring presence, emotional precision, and authenticity to every performance. I know how to hold a room, connect with an audience, and speak to themes that resonate deeply. Whether I’m performing, teaching a workshop, or writing a custom poem, my goal is always the same: to create a meaningful experience rooted in culture, truth, and connection
